So, How Do We Earn a Living While Traveling Full-Time?
There are many rumours out there. A lot of people are curious but really have no idea how we can afford to live and travel like we do. So I want to explain exactly how my partner and I earn a living from our laptops while we travel the world… It may not be exactly how you would expect.
Spoiler Alert: We’re not drug dealers or porn stars! …And most of our income does NOT come from teaching others ‘how to make it online’ lol.
Basically, I am a self-employed travel blogger and internet marketer. I help companies sell more of their stuff. Either through my blog and social media accounts or theirs.
I want to explain how the whole work online while traveling the world idea can, in fact, become a reality for those with a hunger for travel and entrepreneurship …And you don’t need to be a guru or sell your friends on any kind of get-rich-quick scheme I seem to see everywhere these days.
That being said, I want to be very clear:
I am not a Guru. I cannot make you rich. I do not have a secret formula. Nor do I have simple strategies for you to follow or make money program for you to plug into that will get you rich lol.
I am not writing this to try and convince you of anything. There are enough “gurus” out there that do that already.
This is me explaining what I do. This is not so you can be like me or do the same as me, but get ideas for your own business ventures.
Also: If you do not have any desire in travel blogging or starting a career online, then this article is not for you.
Here’s a breakdown of how my business works. Please, take my ideas and use at your own will:
#1. My Travel Blog (Influencer Marketing)
This is my main source of income, which includes many sources of income throughout.
Let me explain:
When I was plumbing full-time, I always wanted to travel the world. I would save up all year to go on 2-3 week vacations and come back to work broke.
I started a travel blog to keep a memory book of my adventures. I had heard of people that made money blogging but I didn’t know how. So I just pretended I did it for fun in the beginning, but I always had an intention in the back of my mind to earn money from it. Long story short I did just that. And have since turned it into a great business.
Through my blog, I partner with companies and promote the products and services I believe in or enjoy.
I do this through different blog posts or in videos I create. I use my social media following to bring readers back to my blog where I then share experiences, places, and companies I love.

This is a business post that promotes the accounting platform I use called Xero. In promoting Xero within that post, I earned $250 US for writing the post and a % in commissions for every person that uses Xero after reading my post.
Sales are tracked through the links I place inside my blog post. So Xero can track everyone who uses Xero’s services after going through my site.
But I would be lying if I said that I make a living just by writing blog posts. There are way too many bloggers out there. I use social media sites and paid advertising to promote specific post to people which brings readers back to my site.
So the Xero post in the example could potentially earn thousands of dollars in profit over the next year if I promote it and it does well.
I also work with companies in different ways, such as linking them to different videos like THIS ONE which advertises the app WithLocals as we took a tour through Kuala Lumpur.
In doing so, companies will either pay me per sale or pay a lump sum for the promotion.
#2. Marketing with companies
I specialise in Facebook advertising. I have spent well over $500k through Facebook’s marketing platform over the years with great success.
This has lead into partnerships with many companies and businesses.
For example, my dad runs a skylight company in New Zealand. I use Facebook to promote his skylights to people in New Zealand.

Tip: A business doesn’t need a lot of “likes” on Facebook. You can run specific marketing campaigns to your audience and do really well if what you offer is good. The page above has had a great return on spend. We targeted the local area for quotes and received an immediate response. Many businesses should try this.
I have run ad campaigns for people like James Altucher, the Author who wrote Choose Yourself. And Kamal Ravikant, who recently published the book Rebirth, a Fable of Love Forgiveness & following your heart.
Note: I am sorry, I am not available to run Facebook campaigns for your business right now.
These partnerships roughly account for 1/4 of my total income. Much less than blogging and marketing offers through my blog.
#3. Behind Closed Doors
This is my passion project vs money maker. But it might earn us good income down the line.
Here’s how: We don’t have time to work with individuals 1 on 1 with all the travel we do. But we get a lot (hundreds) of questions each day for help regarding online marketing, blogging, etc.
So we created a community for people to link up and connect with others in pursuit of a more internet based business and called it “Behind Closed Doors”
Inside our members’ area, we have many detailed video tutorials, guides, workbooks, and podcasts that break down the strategies we use in our business. We then send out a monthly report with interviews of other entrepreneurs, up-to-date marketing campaigns, and new ideas we come across for the entrepreneurial minded.
This is not a major income stream for us. We cover subscription costs like video hosting, membership site, email subscribers, advertising, and an assistant to manage memberships.
But the community of members, success stories, and street credit thus far has been well worth it for us.
Note: As people continue to have success through following our reports. We may do further 1 on 1 coaching which we will charge for. But only if we’re confident we can really help grow their businesses further.
So BCD may end up being an income producer in a few years providing we keep delivering good stuff. But for now, it’s a great brand builder to help get our names out there.
With that being said, I hope this sparks some ideas for you.
This, (especially the first strategy) is how many bloggers earn a living.
Others who get a lot of readers will often use Google Adsense to place banners within their posts and on their blogs. I don’t get enough readers to justify having banners everywhere, I would only make $1000/month or so maybe. YouTuber’s – those who have a large following on youtube, get paid through the little advertising clips you see before the videos start. Again, I don’t get that many views per video, or people on my blog, so I stick with Facebook and Instagram haha. But these are other options for you to look into.
I have met many people who work online and travel the world. There are many things you can do and many opportunities out there. This is what we do. It works well for us and I hope it provides some inspiration to you.
