Sometimes, we travel to places just based off of a recommendation and great photos. Plus, Hannah and I (especially Hannah) find it hard to resist real-life places that seem straight out of a fairytale. Hallstatt in is one of those places.
What’s the best time to explore a tourist haven like Hallstatt? …First thing in the morning, before everyone else wakes up!
Hallstatt is located a quick drive from Salzburg, Austria on the western side of Lake Hallstatt. If you drive in on your own, it’s a beautiful drive around the lake and there’s a tourist parking lot where you can leave your car. If you don’t have your own car/rental, here’s an official site for how to get into Hallstatt by bus, train, or ferry.
Many people take a day trip to Hallstatt, but given our affinity for fairytale towns, we decided to come in and spend the night. Which was interesting, as it was bustling and loud at night!
So our first night, everything was too crowded and busy so we decided to experience a town like Hallstatt empty as possible in the early morning hours the next day. It was great to be able to walk the town before the crowds of tourists got bigger and bigger.
It’s incredibly beautiful and looks just out of a fairytale storybook with colorful buildings and flowers all around. You’re not even allowed to drive a car into the Old Town as the streets are too narrow, which makes walking around great. Can only imagine how chaotic it would be with cars added to all of the tourists running around! Especially in the summer…
Once you’re done, sit down, have a coffee (or wine), relax and people watch. One thing about Hallstatt, is there aren’t a lot of “activities” to do there, which makes it a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery. There’s nowhere to rush to, so just stroll around, watch the swans, enjoy the ambiance and the company you’re with. Every so often, you even get distracted from visiting the World Heritage sites because you’ve made a furry friend (or 2).
Highly recommend as a site to see in Austria. One day, maybe we’ll even learn how to pronounce it in German.
I have a theory guys… do you think little cute towns paint their houses and buildings a bunch of bright colours to bring in more tourists?? Because these types of towns definitely make me want to go haha! . . . . . . #hallstatt #austria #intrepidintrovert #passionpassport #dametraveler #europe_vacations #girlslovetravel #colorfulworld #beautifuldestinations #travelaustria #unesco
